Chaulking:

Chaulking is done to seal around the outside vents, including the one that hooks to your dryer hose. Any gaps and cracks around or outside the vents need to be filled. You also need to chaulk around window edges and trims to seal against the drafts.

Insulation Foam:

Insulation spray foam is easily available in home improvement stores. It comes handy when filling the gaps in between the walls and the baseboards. Insulating foam can also be used to fill holes for television and telephone cables, as well as outside faucets.

Weather Stripping:

Each door of your house that opens outdoors as well as window in your house should be sealed with weather stripping. It is available in a wide variety of widths. The underside of window sashes, outside edges of screen doors should be protected with this strip.

The garage doors and the doors to the utility rooms should be thoroughly waterproofed with caulk. You can also use the rubber stoppers or gaskets which can be placed against the leakages.

Rubber Gasket Strips:

Garage doors are usually protected with rubber gasket strips that help keep out large drafts, which find their way inside your home.

Clear Plastic Sheeting:

Interior sheeting kits are popular plastic sheeting that comes in a roll, which you can spread over your window and then attach with double-sided sticky tape. 

Roofs of the house need to be protected from water and you should check your roof from time to time to be sure that there are no displaced shingles or tiles and no waste has accumulated in one place. If this happens, then water can easily seep through, damage your walls, and create mold problems eventually.

Therefore, it is advisable to carry on home improvement job keeping certain basic things in mind that need foremost attention during severe weather conditions. Applying water resistant paint on the walls will prevent walls from damaging.

Weatherproofing your home doesn't have to be expensive and lavish home improvement project but it certainly needs to be done to save money, electricity and be comfortable because you never know Mother Nature has in store for you.

If you have access to your attic, you may also want to check for water leaks in there. Many times a home owner won't notice the leak until it reaches the inside of the ceiling. By this time, the water could have caused damage in the attics, roof and walls.
